Deposits of talc in varying degrees of purity are found all over the world. Talc occurs as a soft, grayish stone that feels greasy and is called by a variety of names, including steatite, soapstone, potstone, and French chalk (tailor's chalk). Pyrophyllite, a hydrous aluminum silicate, is similar to talc stones and has much the same uses.
