That looks very well made. Shopsmith has made a conical sanding disc for 25+ years now, and that was after bringing it back after they stopped producing them in the 1960's. I can even sharpen my jointer and planer knives on it with a sharpening jig they produce and silicon carbide discs. I really like that this version has a double taper!

The conical sander does an excellent job of doing what it is designed for but is terrible (and dangerous) if you are trying to take off too much material.

I was in a similar situation having 150-grit on the conical and 80-grit on the flat disc. I ended up buying an extra flat-disk just for 150-grit sharpening. If I understand your question properly, you are wanting to use the extension-table-mounted sharpening guide with the conical sanding disc.
